Patricia Collins

Patricia qualified with a BSc (HONS) Physiotherapy in 2001, and spent four and a half years working for the NHS and then the Spire Hospital working in several different areas including, Orthopaedics, Neurological and Cardiothoracic Rehabilitation, Women’s Health, Rheumatology, Intensive care, Respiratory and Musculoskeletal Outpatients.
After leaving the hospital environment she took up a post with the Ministry of Defence, delivering occupational health services and lengthy rehabilitation programmes. She helped soldiers return to full duties in the shortest time possible and also worked closely with military athletes to gain her first experience of sports physiotherapy.
Patricia then spent the next three years working with Orthopaedic Surgeon and former England Rugby player, Mr Jonathan Webb at his clinic in Bristol. The Clinic was a multidisciplinary practice, which incorporated the expertise of orthopaedic surgeons, Sports Medicine Doctors, Musculoskeletal Radiologists, Physiotherapists, Podiatrists, and Sports Massage Therapists. She gained considerable experience in preparing patients for orthopaedic surgery and extensive rehabilitation experience with patients following sports and other musculoskeletal injuries.
Patricia has worked in sports from amateur to professional and elite levels, spending many years at the side of a rugby pitch where she provides immediate trauma care, in addition to diagnosing and managing any injuries that arise. She spent several years with Old Colstonian’s RFC in Bristol, and then the University of Bristol Men’s and Women’s RFC. She currently works with the Ireland Rugby Football Union (IRFU) Exiles. Patricia served as team physiotherapist to Team GB Bobsleigh and travelled to the World Championships where she delivered physiotherapy and sports massage services to world class athletes. She has also worked with Team GB Paralympics in the run up to London 2012, and toured with GB Ultimate Frisbee to the World Championships as well as supporting Wales Lacrosse under 19 on training weekends.
She continues to work at the University of Bristol Sports Medicine Clinic, working closely with the University High Performance students, many of whom hold national and international titles. Patricia screens athletes biannually, assessing for any potential injury risks and intervening, with the aim of reducing injury risk and enhancing performance. This is an area she is particularly passionate about, and enjoys helping shape and improve an athlete’s performance. Patricia is heavily involved with the various sports teams, providing pre-season injury prevention workshops and foam rolling classes as well as triage clinics throughout the year.
She also has significant experience in assessing and treating running related injuries and screens athletes to detect biomechanical imbalances that can lead to injury and hinder performance. Through her work she has been involved with Run Bristol and is passionate about ensuring runners are up to date with current evidence about the best management in treatment of injuries, as well as recovery post event.
