Screening and Biomechanical Assessment

Bike physio assessmentBiomechanics is the study of human movement. Each and every physiotherapy assessment at The Rowans Physiotherapy Practice will incorporate biomechanical analysis in order to determine what has caused or is causing your injury. The aim is to prevent the problem from recurring, so you will be given strategies and exercises based on the assessment findings. We look at simple movements like how you walk, jump and squat, which gives us valuable information in determining the underlying cause. Our screening appointments are relevant to all of those engaged in sport, and are particularly useful in the pre season period. The testing procedures we employ are those used in elite sport by the national governing bodies and are supported by best evidence, which help predict injuries before they occur. The aim is to develop a self-management plan where the individual can work on exercises specific to their needs, thereby reducing injury risk and maximising performance. If appropriate and relevant, we will film you performing certain movements and using software programmes to analyse your movements in more detail.

Physiotherapy Treatments

Physiotherapy
After the initial assessment treatments include;

  • Manual therapy – This includes joint mobilisation and manipulation, soft tissue and myfascial release.
  • Exercises – Based on the findings of the assessment and examination all  patients will receive a home exercise programme . Exercises will address flexibility, strength, control and balance restoring normal movement and function.
  • Electrotherapy – Therapeutic ultrasound has been used by physiotherapists since the 1940’s to promote healing by increasing local blood flow. Recent evidence has confirmed that low dose ultrasound can promote bone healing in delayed or non healing fractures.
  • Functional rehabilitation – In addition to restoring normal movement and strength, the most valuable and effective treatment is functional rehabilitation. This takes the individual’s’ specific examination findings, along with the functional deficits (such as an inability to kneel) in order to return fully to the demands of daily life and/or a specific sport or activity.
  • Advice and education – Each and every person assessed will receive advice and education in order to self manage the presenting problem as effectively as possible. Our aim is not just to relieve symptoms, but to get to the root cause of the problem, thereby reducing the risk of symptoms returning. Our therapists have occupational health experience so can advise you on your posture and ergonomics at work.

Taping
Physiotherapy tapingAt The Rowans Physiotherapy Practice, our clinicians are trained in the application of traditional sports taping techniques, and the more recent kinesiology, or “K” Taping approach. Taping may be indicated if your painful area needs to be offloaded and supported, such as in acute shoulder or knee problems. The general aim of using tape is to reduce pain and swelling in order to protect the joint or area from further injury.  Kinesiology tape is a thin, stretchy cotton tape which was developed with the aim of mimicking human skin in both thickness and elasticity. The tape is comfortable and light enough to be worn without restricting your movement. You will have noticed more and more professional athletes using K Tape in recent years but it is also used in relation to occupational, postural and degenerative problems, and even in pregnancy to support the growing bump.
Pilates
PilatesPilates (contrology) is designed to give you suppleness, a natural grace, and skill that will be unmistakably reflected in the way you walk, in the way you play, and in the way you work.
Pilates is a series of gentle repetitive movements incorporating stretching and conditioning exercises which will help your body to function better and will help improve your overall posture, flexibility and core strength. Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century and is designed to enhance suppleness, natural grace that will be unmistakably reflected in the way you walk, in the way you play, and in the way you work. This form of exercise focuses upon strengthening the inner core of the spine, which consists of muscles in the abdomen, lower back and hip and is often referred to as the ‘powerhouse’. The exercises performed focus key principles: postural alignment, correct breathing, coordination and balance, all of which will help to minimise the risk of injury and can be used in the rehabilitation of almost any injury. The Pilates approach can be modified to suit individual needs from beginner through to advanced and is suitable for everyone regardless of fitness level or age.
The benefits of Pilates include:
  • Improved overall posture and alignment
  • Improved overall flexibility
  • Minimising the risk of postural related injuries
  • Enhanced relaxation through the use of correct breathing control
The Rowans Physiotherapy Practice is passionate about providing the very best pilates and is taught by our Chartered Physiotherapist Fran.  She has many years of experience and is trained in the APPI approach to pilates. This offers a very specific physiotherapy assessment and approach which is then tailored to each individual’s needs and rehabilitation requirements.
We currently offer 1:1 pilates sessions and are in the process of setting up Matwork classes. We also provide antenatal and postnatal pilates on a 1:1 basis.

Sports Massage

Sports massage helps alleviate the stress and tension which builds up in the body’s soft tissues during physical activity. It can help prevent injuries that can hinder your performance and achievement in the sporting arena.  However sports massage is not just for athletes, anyone can benefit from it.

Sports massage incorporates a combination of other techniques involving stretching, compression, friction, toning and trigger point response techniques.

Prices

  • 1 hour session £40.00
  • 3/4 hour session £32.00
  • 1/2 hour session £30.00

Each session is tailored to how I’m feeling and what hurts on the day. At the end of each massage session I feel physically and mentally relaxed, I have suffered a lot of neck and shoulder pain from an accident but since having treatment and attending pilates my discomfort has eased, and is now manageable.

I felt so relaxed and calm at the end of my first session and have returned on many occasions as a result.

Wendy

Fran, I just wanted to really thank you for the most amazing assessment today.  It really was incredibly thorough, you listened to all I had to say and took it all on board, and I really felt that you totally engaged with trying to get to the route of the problem I have with my hip.  I think for the first time in all these years there is some hope of genuinely trying to tackle what is going on.  So, I just wanted to thank you for your time and effort.  I am walking so much better now, just from that one thing of loosening off the hip joint and I can actually feel my hip move properly now.  I thank you for your very in depth concern to get to the root cause of things.
